Carlos Arroyo joins Miami
October 13th, 2009 | by joshbaumgard33 |Finally the Heat have gotten their act together and signed a more than capable back up point guard in seasoned veteran Carlos Arroyo.
His contract is not guarunteed and will earn him 1.1 million, the veteran minimum. It is a zero risk, reap the rewards type of contract.
Sure Chris Quinn is a decent player and excellent shooter. However, he isn’t exactly a top notch backup point guard and wouldn’t crack most rotations in the NBA.
Arroyo, native of Puerto Rico and former FIU Golden Panther, brings some much needed experience and stability to the back court. He has a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 3:1, which would rank top ten amongĀ point guards last season.
He also brings to the table a mentor for the young Mario Chalmers, who is at a key point in his development. Arroyo can teach Chalmers how to run a squad and to make better decisions in different situations. Carlos played in Israel last season in his one year stint away from the NBA.
“I always wanted to be part of the Heat,” said Arroyo, whose wife is a South Florida native.
Before that be played for the Magic, Pistons and Jazz. In his last season with the Magic he averaged 6.9 points and 3.5 assists. A big weapon of his is his free throw shooting, a career average of 80 percent. Excellent move by Pat Riley and the Miami heat.
Carlos also has recently launched a music career and you can listen to his song here:
